by Robin Strauka, Malgomajskolan

Karin Kock, born on
June 2, 1891 in Klara parish in Stockholm and passed away on July 28 1976 in the same city was president of the Association of female Academics. This was an idealistic and independent group created 1904 ito help women with an academic degree to have the same privileges as men with the same competence. Like pension and access to certain governmental services. In 1922, the association joined the “International Federation of University Women” (IFUW).

Karin Kock was not only a president, she also was a scholar of National Economics as well as a Social Democratic politician. She was the country's first ever female minister of cabinet and the first woman professor in National Economics. She made lots of changes during her career such as two institutional changes in 1909 and 1921. One important step was when “Behörighetslagen” - which guaranteed women the opportunity for jobs in the official administration - came to use in 1925.

Karin Kock was initially liberal but joined Social Democrats during the 1930s. She had a lot of missions such as general expert in economic investigations in a women-working-committee in 1936. She was also secretary general in the commision for economy after war-scheduling and government delegate at the international working congress in Paris 1945.
Between 1947 and 1949 she served as a cabinet minister in the Social Democrat government under Prime Minister Tage Erlander.
