This fascinating movie tells the story of Marjane Satrapi’s life. Marjane Satrapi was born in Iran where we see most of her suffering, her joy, her biggest experiences and her relationships with other people. 
Throughout the movie, we see the deterioration of women’s position in an oppressed society. We are shown the different types of women’s reactions, many of them unfortunately take it laying down. The heroine, however, reacted with all the defiance expected of a rebel’s granddaughter, if not more. 
When she is 15, she travels to Vienna to study. Europe is a drastic change to Marjane’s norm. She quickly learns women have as much more freedom as she was told, but she eventually is left homeless. This is when she experiences Europe’s numerous faults. 
After ending up in the hospital, she returns to Iran, to her family. She can’t stand women’s situation in Iran and rebells again. Gradually she comes to the realization, Iran is no longer for her. Marjane Satrapi returns to Europe, this time Paris. She has since never returned to her homeland. Despite never going back, the real Marjane Satrapi’s heart is still partially where her family is, Iran.

Our first recommendation is the film The Swap(2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTSf-4rDFFo The Swap is about two teenagers who have exchanged their bodies and take advantage of this in their everyday life. Instead of fighting to win the first place in the hockey match, Jake has to take , Ellie’s place in gymnastics and protect her friendship with Sassy. Meanwhile Ellie must play hockey with his bigger brothers, a game she doesn‘t understand. This does not prevent them from being successful and come back into their own bodies. The teens are forced to walk in one another’s shoes and they learn valuable lessons about the opposite gender. We really recommend this film because there are not enough movies like The Swap. The whole film is connected with our topic and presents gender roles in our society in a rather humorous way.   We would also like to recommend Disney’s The Beauty and the Beast . Germany recommends (March edition)

The Bletchley Circle This series follows the lives of a group of middle-aged women who worked in Bletchley Park during World War 2. After the war ends, they must continue with their normal lives, no longer decoding messages from the German’s famous ‘Enigma’. The show highlights their positions and everything which was taken away from these women as the war ended. When one of these women comes forward to the police, having found a pattern linking a series of grisly murders, she is dismissed. Time and time again the women in this show are dismissed and it can be agreed upon that this accurately demonstrates women’s position in English society at the time.
