Persépolis:
This fascinating movie tells the story of
Marjane Satrapi’s life. Marjane Satrapi was born in Iran where we see most of
her suffering, her joy, her biggest experiences and her relationships with
other people.
Throughout the movie, we see the deterioration of women’s position
in an oppressed society. We are shown the different types of women’s reactions,
many of them unfortunately take it laying down. The heroine, however, reacted
with all the defiance expected of a rebel’s granddaughter, if not more.
When
she is 15, she travels to Vienna to study. Europe is a drastic change to
Marjane’s norm. She quickly learns women have as much more freedom as she was
told, but she eventually is left homeless. This is when she experiences Europe’s
numerous faults.
After ending up in the hospital, she returns to Iran, to her
family. She can’t stand women’s situation in Iran and rebells again. Gradually
she comes to the realization, Iran is no longer for her. Marjane Satrapi returns
to Europe, this time Paris. She has since never returned to her homeland. Despite
never going back, the real Marjane Satrapi’s heart is still partially where her
family is, Iran.
