This week NHEHS has three recommendations for you!

Our first recommendation is Hidden Figures.
Hidden Figures is about three ambitious and bright African-American women who are interested in science. They get invited to work for NASA on John Glenn’s space launch. They really impacted this mission and without them, the mission would have failed. The movie was made to give these women the recognition they deserved for the first time since the launch.
We really recommend this film because there are not enough movies like Hidden Figures that give recognition to people who have had an important role in projects that have changed the world, but have been forgotten. This film is all about female empowerment and brings tears to our eyes when we think about the challenges that women, especially African-American women had to face at the time.

Our second recommendation is Bend It Like Beckham
Bend It Like Beckham is a film about overcoming stereotypes and following your dreams. It follows Jess and Jules, two girls from West London who have a passion for football but are oppressed by their parents, who think they should not play sport and should focus on being more girlish and reserved. They become friends after Jules invites Jess onto her football team, The Hounslow Harriers, and she joins without asking her very strict parents. However, they eventually find out and this interrupts their stereotypical view of her not playing sport.
We recommend this film because it shows that you can do anything you put your mind to and you can break barriers caused by gender stereotypes. This is good because this is not often shown in the media and we want this to change. Another great quality of Bend It Like Beckham is that it reminds you to always be yourself and the characters really emphasise this, even though it is difficult for them. The true to life aspect of the film is refreshing to watch and we really recommend this for everyone.

Following on from the recommendation of Hidden Figures, Mrs Swift recommends BBC’s 100 Women. This includes a series of five short animated films with subtitles that celebrate talented women from history whose work has been overshadowed by the husbands, brothers or fathers. I saw the link to this film about the physicist Mileva Maric-Einstein on social media and was really interested to find out about someone I’d never heard of before. I’m planning on watching some more of the series and hope you do too!
